Interpreting abnormal endocrine labs is a common challenge in primary care. Nurse practitioners frequently encounter abnormal thyroid tests, including elevated TSH levels suggesting hypothyroidism and suppressed TSH levels associated with hyperthyroidism. Understanding how to interpret thyroid function tests—including TSH, free T4, and T3—is essential for accurate diagnosis and appropriate management of thyroid disease.
This course provides a practical framework for evaluating abnormal thyroid labs in adults, including identifying overt versus subclinical hypothyroidism, evaluating low TSH levels, and determining when treatment with levothyroxine is appropriate. Clinicians will also learn how to recognize patterns of hyperthyroidism, when to initiate symptom management, and when referral to endocrinology is necessary.
In addition to thyroid disorders, the course reviews the evaluation of elevated prolactin levels in primary care. Learners will review common causes of hyperprolactinemia, including medication effects, hypothyroidism, chronic kidney disease, and pituitary adenomas. The course also covers appropriate indications for prolactin testing, interpretation of prolactin levels, and when pituitary imaging or endocrine referral is indicated.
